Skilled Cancer Professionals Survey

Campbell Research has been commissioned by the Cancer Institute of NSW to undertake an evaluation of the Skilled Cancer Professionals Program, including a survey of cancer care professionals.

Background

Established by an Act of the NSW Parliament in July 2003, the Cancer Institute NSW is funded by the NSW State Government as a response to the need to decrease the devastating impact of cancer on society. The Institute is charged with overseeing and accelerating the effectiveness of cancer control in NSW, and provides expert advice and resources to patients, the public, health care professionals and the Government.

The foundations of the Skilled Cancer Professionals Program were established in 2005, in the goals set out in the original NSW Cancer plan (2004-2006). In 2005 and 2006 funding for competitive grants was established, and frameworks for a number of other programs designed to support professional development through developing and enhancing cancer clinical practice, skills, knowledge and expertise.

In the second NSW Cancer Plan (2007-2010) these programs were grouped together under the Skilled Cancer Professionals Program. The Skilled Cancer Professionals Program encompasses a number of learning and educational opportunities that target cancer professionals from a range of disciplines working in cancer services across NSW.

Evaluation Objectives

The Cancer Institute of NSW is preparing for the development of the third Cancer Plan that will commence in 2010. Part of the planning entails an evaluation of the Skilled Cancer Professionals Program. Campbell Research has been commissioned by the Cancer Institute NSW to undertake the evaluation. The core questions guiding the evaluation are:

  1. Has the Skilled Cancer Professionals Program and Program initiatives successfully contributed to the desired impacts and outcomes as stated in the Cancer Plans for 2005-2006 and 2007- 2010 and the Program initiative guidelines?
  2. Has the Skilled Cancer Professionals Program and Program initiatives provided value for money in terms of return on investment?

The findings from the evaluation will inform the future implementation of the Skilled Cancer Professionals Program.
